Frequently Asked Questions

about Online Pregnancy Yoga

Pregnancy yoga is a designed to support the physical and emotional well-being of pregnant women. Focusing on gentle, safe, and effective poses that help strengthen and stretch the body while promoting relaxation and mindfulness during pregnancy. Pregnancy yoga is tailored to the changing needs of the pregnant body and incorporates modified yoga poses, breathing exercises (pranayama), relaxation techniques, and mindfulness practices to help ease pregnancy discomfort, improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, reduces stress and anxiety, builds a connection with baby and prepares the body and mind for birth.

Pregnancy yoga differs from regular yoga in several ways, these include modified poses which are adjusted to accommodate pregnancy changes. During pregnancy hormones relax the body and the growing bump can cause changes in the centre of gravity, there are many other changes internally to accommodate the growing baby. Pregnancy yoga movements are slower in transitions, take account of changes in balance, cater to joint sensitivity, and avoid the risk of overstretching, this reduces the risk of injury overall. Pregnancy yoga also focuses on breathing techniques and relaxation to manage stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and to prepare for birth. There is also a focus on pelvic floor strength and function. Attuned Yoga and Birth pregnancy yoga membership is available from 13 weeks, as long as you have no medical complications or contraindications. Many women choose to start yoga in the second trimester when the risk of miscarriage is lower, and they begin to feel more energetic. However, always check with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise routine during pregnancy. In pregnancy yoga, there are some poses and practices that should be avoided to ensure safety. Overstretching, overexerting yourself, intense core work, deep twists, and lying on your back for prolonged periods should all be avoided. This is all accommodated in Attuned Yoga and Birth classes and videos. You should be cautious with balancing poses as your centre of gravity changes, again this is accommodated, and you can always use the stability of a chair or a wall to support you. Adaptions and options are given so that you can cater to your own body and your own needs, and these can fluctuate through pregnancy, even on different days, as energy levels fluctuate.

You should stop pregnancy yoga if you experience any of the following: Any sharp or unusual pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, feeling like your heart is beating too fast, any vaginal bleeding, contractions, if you think your waters have released or if you have any concerns about yourself or you baby. If you have been told you have any risk of pre-term labour or pregnancy complications, consult your healthcare provider. Throughout any pregnancy yoga, listen to your body and adapt your practice as needed. Many women continue pregnancy yoga throughout their pregnancy, but it’s always important to be mindful of how you’re feeling, an approach that pregnancy yoga fosters.

Unless you experience any of these symptoms, or are advised by a medical professional not to continue, then you can continue to practice yoga throughout your pregnancy. However, energy levels and capacity can fluctuate during pregnancy, therefore it’s always important to be mindful of how you are feeling, modify poses according to energy levels and rest out of poses whenever you feel it is best. The ethos of Attuned Pregnancy Yoga is to develop a relationship with your body and your baby so that you can be in-tune with what you need.

Pregnancy yoga offers numerous benefits for both the body and mind. You can improve strength and flexibility to support your changing body and reduce pregnancy discomfort such as aches and pains, swelling and nausea. Deep breathing and relaxation reduces tension and anxiety improving mood and promoting emotional wellbeing and sleep. Blood flow improves reducing swelling and increases oxygenation for both mum and baby.

Attuned yoga and birth classes don’t require much special equipment. You will need a device to access livestream classes and recordings and a yoga mat to practise on and enough space to perform the postures. Wear stretchy or loose fitting clothes that support but don’t restrict your movement. Yoga is usually practised bare foot, for safety, but you can but specialised yoga socks with grips if you choose. You can also have socks and a blanket to hand to stay warm during the relaxation. In addition to this you will need a yoga bolster, or a firm pillow you can fold over for comfort and breathing practise. Other cushions or pillows can be helpful for comfort during relaxation.

A yoga block is useful for modifying poses, and a birth ball can be helpful, this can be used for labour too. Make sure you have a water bottle at the ready to stay hydrated, and make sure you can ventilate the room you are in, to avoid overheating. You can have a light snack available too, pregnancy energy levels can fluctuate unexpectedly. Eating regularly is important, it’s not advisable to eat a large meal before you practise but a light snack before or during class to maintain your wellbeing is important. If you want to listen to music or a play list during classes having a speaker available is a good idea.

You join the membership for £20.00 per month, you will have access to the livestream class and the video to catch up on if you are unable to attend live. You will also have access to the video library of classes so you have the choice to meet your own needs in your own time, wherever you are. You can cancel the membership at any time.
